Worksheet 1: “The beginning…”

We rely on the publicity that the media has given to graphics of daily deaths and moving averages to introduce the fundamental theorem of calculus from the beginning of a freshmen calculus course. This WS-1 provides the students means to discover and express two ideas:
1) The variation of then running total graphic is the area under the daily deaths graphic;
2) The moving average of deaths on a certain basis, is the average height of the daily deaths graphic.
These, of course, are proto statements of the fundamental theorem of calculus.
